John C Maxwell, one of my favourite authors, highlights some points to gain a better perspective on when to fight back and when to “let it go,” practice these following disciplines:


1. Spend time with people who are different from you. This helps you appreciate and understand how others think and work. You will be less inclined to judge or battle them.

2. In matters of personal preference or taste, give in. Keep the main thing the main thing. If you don’t save your energy for what really matters, you’ll wear yourself out and wear out your welcome with others.

3. Don’t take things too personally. In general, hurting people hurt people. And they’re also easily hurt by others. Keep that in mind when you’re on the receiving end of someone’s anger.

4. Practice the 101% Principle. Whenever possible in a difficult situation, find the 1% that you do agree on and give it 100% of your effort.

5. Be a servant leader. If your mindset is to serve rather than be served, you will be less likely to encounter resistance.

Due to my limited knowledge in coding and all that technical stuff, I was really struggling to get the archives plug-in to work properly. So I thought I would contact the guys over at SRS Solutions as they created the theme I’m currently using on my blog: “Eos”. Sabastian, the guy who responded promptly to my email, said that my problem had nothing to do with the Eos theme.

So right then and there he could have just left me because my problem had nothing to do with him or the theme…but he didn’t. He said, in his own words, “I don’t just want to leave you stranded…I’ll take a look to see what might be the problem.” WOW! Now that my friends, is service at it’s best! Something which is really scarce these days.

It wasn’t long afterwards and I had my archives page published. So I just want to take this opportunity to thank Sabastian and his team for going beyond the call of duty and helping me out. It may have been a small thing for them, but it’s huge for me. I really appreciate it!

Not everything I’ve learned in life has come from textbooks. Just like you, I’ve learned some of my best lessons through experience. Some of the most significant Life Lessons I’ve learned are:

1. I’ve learned that salamanders don’t eat as often as I do. What looks like a good idea at first may not be so good if it doesn’t benefit all parties involved.

2. I’ve learned that you can’t hide eggplant under your plate. Putting off what you don’t like only makes matters worse in the end.

3. I’ve learned that just when I got my room the way I liked it, my mom and dad made me clean it. Everything can’t be the way you want it. Learn to be flexible.

4. I’ve learned that no matter how you toss the coin, there are always two sides. No matter how right you think you are, you can always learn by listening to another opinion.

5. I’ve learned that I shouldn’t go shopping for food when I’m hungry. When I go too long without meeting my own needs, they will find a way of taking over. Take time to understand and meet your needs.

6. I’ve learned that the grass grows greener over the septic tank. You’re not to deny your problems. It’s the struggles and challenges that will become your greatest strengths.

7. I’ve learned to drive on parkways and park on driveways. Life can be confusing, so discover your direction and purpose and be faithful to it.

8. I’ve learned that 7-11 stores really don’t need locks. If you’re going to be “open with others” all the time, then you really do not need to lock people out.

9. I’ve learned that everyone can use a prayer, no matter who they are. Take time to pray and intercede for others.

10. I’ve learned that if you care, it shows. Let it show.

11. I’ve learned that life’s a journey. Enjoy the ride.

As a result of reading it frequently I have gained valuable insights and learned some priceless stuff. His main focus is on leadership, productivity, and social media. Being the CEO of the largest Christian book publisher in the world he shares his thoughts freely and I’m truly blessed by his writing. It’s like having my own personal leadership coach. In one of his last posts of last year he challenged his readers to ask seven questions about 2009 for personal reflection and closure. I did the exercise and it was highly beneficial to me as I answered the questions and reflected on the year as a whole. I will answer these questions and challenge you to engage in the same exercise.

1. If last year were a movie of your life, what genre would it be?

Drama, Action, Tragedy, Romance, Adventure, or a combination?

• Mine was definitely an adventure as I engaged in a lot of things for the first time last year. Blogging, cycling (including a race), moving back home to Zimbabwe, working in the media industry.

2. What were the two or three major themes that kept recurring?

These can be single words or phrases. For me, they were:

• learning and doing new things like, writing (my blog), cycling, running, learning video editing, and speaking in public as well as many more.
• learning to cope with less financially.
• great times with friends.

3. What did you accomplish this past year that you are the most proud of?

These can be in any area of your life—spiritual, relational, vocational physical, etc. Be as specific as possible. Here’s some of mine:

• starting to cycle and competing in the Argus (the biggest timed race in the world).
• becoming more spiritual by praying and reading my Bible more.
• paying more attention to my health and wellness by engaging in exercise and eating more healthy.
• moving back home to Zimbabwe.

4. What do you feel you should have been acknowledged for but weren’t?

This may be a little to personal for some of you to share publicly but for me some things were:

• being the mediator between two friends who were having a conflict.
• starting an exercise program and sticking to it.
• managing to keep my head above the water in the face of adversity. Not giving up!

5. What disappointments or regrets did you experience this past year?

Where did you let yourself down? Where did you let others down? Here are some of mine:

• not losing my belly fat as I intended to do at the beginning of last year
• not taking enough time out for myself for renewal
• not being able to run my first half marathon due to injury
• not being able to attain work permit for South Africa

6. What was missing from last year as you look back?

Look at each major area of your life. Don’t focus now on having to do anything about it. For now, just list each item. Here’s my  list:

• lack of focus on my goals
• lack of discipline
• not enough time spent with my family

7. What were the major life-lessons you learned this past year?

Boil this down to a few short, pithy statements. Mine for example:

• don’t trust people easily, you will be disappointed
• cherish the important relationships in your life
• plan your work, then work your plan

Now that you have your list, it is time to acknowledge the past give closure to it. It’s over. There’s nothing you can do to change it. This is hugely important. What was done was done. It’s time to close that chapter and turn to the next one.
