I guess it seems like some people like to differentiate the application of the Golden Rule with the Platinum Rule based on the focus of the actual wording of them. But ultimately, if you apply the Golden Rule in the "right spirit" in which it was intended you do end up with the "Platinum Rule". Thanks for your insight and contribution. The Golden Rule isn't a formula to be applied verbatim but a guideline as to how to exercise practical compassion. As such it incorporates a ‘spirit' which guides how to apply it. I don't mean anything supernatural - just that it needs to be applied in the right spirit - which is the spirit of the Golden Rule. So if you apply the Golden Rule in the spirit of the Golden Rule (effectively applying it to itself) you get the so-called, enhanced, ‘Platinum Rule': do to others as <em>they</em> wish to be treated. Part of the power of the Golden Rule is precisely this, that when you actually apply it the Platinum Rule emerges out of it like a butterfly from a chrysalis.
